Figure
5. Lobe profile. One of the most important and least understood
facets of board design involves the transitional area where the hull
side planing surface blends into the curved rail of the board. Many
shapers refer to this feature as the ‘tucked under edge.’
Master-shaper Greg
Griffin calls such transition ‘the lobe.’ Master
Griffin argues that the shape and size of the lobe will significantly
impact the feel of a given board. Further, Master Bert Burger advocates
that the lobe for a small wave board should be crisp and promote release.
All east coast US boards are arguably small-wave boards and since a
board designed specifically for Topsail Island, North Carolina, is undisputedly
a small wave board, the Gromzer lobe is small and very crisp for maximum
release.
